Crud #6 – Zombie Death Squad
You cannot talk about the 80’s Punk scene in Wales without mentioning the unruly young band 4Q and band member Neil Crud, who is still representing today. They gained a reputation and got banned from every venue around. And I think eventually it was mainly because of their Punk Zine CRUD that seemed to get them into a bit of bother. Issue 5 had a shoplifting from Sainsbury joke that got them in trouble, but the arson joke in issue 6 was apparently too much and got them some unwanted attention from the Police. History of Crud magazine here
This was a bit of fun for me. After leaving school I started “System Street Art” and got into the local newspaper. Neil Crud contacted me to get an advert in issue 5 and I did the cover to issue 6. There had been a few stories in the papers about illegal squatters, so obviously I did a Zombie Police Task Force sent to politely ask them to vacate using forceful negotiations.
Who knew it would get so much attention. Lucky me.
One little joke about arson gave the local newspapers some great headlines, it riled up the Greater Manchester Fire department and got the Police investigating Crud. And the local copy writer got to write the words Brutal Death Squad. And Crud had to reprint another 1000 copies it was that much in demand. Do you know how many small press zines would kill to sell 3000 issues?
A lot.. that’s how many.
And big respect to Neil Crud for representing the Punk scene and history. Follow him and his posts in https://link2wales.co.uk/
